Are the change in seasons putting a damper on your immune health?

Sometimes the transition between summer and fall puts added stress on our immune system and bodies. Your body is constantly out of balance, trying to navigate a fine line between internal and external challenges. Walk that line more confidently with the right nutrition. We all know how beneficial vitamins and minerals are for us, but do you know which are the best and most readily available?

We’ve compiled a list of five immune-boosting foods to help keep you happy and healthy during the fall and winter months.

Seeds and Nuts — Zinc is an essential mineral that helps support healthy immune function, but it’s not stored by the body. Consuming nuts and seeds is a great way to boost your intake. A quarter cup of raw pumpkin seeds contains 2.57 mg of zinc. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDAs) for zinc for adults is 8-11mg. Daily Build contains 20mg of zinc per serving, and CalciuMK+ contains 7.5mg zinc per serving.

Mushrooms — Surround yourself with fungus, mushrooms that is. All mushrooms contain beta-glucan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide. Studies suggest that beta-glucan might stimulate the immune system.1 Oyster and portabella mushrooms are good choices. Add mushrooms to stir-fry or pasta dishes. Greens contains an organic mushroom blend of shitake, maitake and reishi varieties — all good sources of beta-glucan. GoYin contains Coriolus versicolor mushroom, another great source of beta-glucans.

Fruits and Vegetables — Vitamins A, C, and E are particularly helpful in supporting immunity. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, dark leafy greens and sweet potatoes. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, and bell peppers. Dark leafy greens, butternut squash and avocado are excellent sources of vitamin E. Pairing these and other fruits and vegetables with adequate protein intake will help supercharge your immunity. Immune6 is an excellent source of vitamin C, as well as vitamin D3. Daily Build contains 446% vitamin E in each serving, as well as over 600% vitamin C. GPS Adapt contains 200% vitamin C. CalciuMK+ is a great source of both vitamin A, D and E.

Garlic — Garlic contains allicin, a component that has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A review published in the February 2009 issue of “Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry” notes that allicin has a variety of antimicrobial properties.2

Probiotics — Probiotics have specific compounds that may help regulate the functions of immune cells and intestinal cells.3 Probiotic is uniquely formulated with seven different types of beneficial bacterial strains of healthy bacteria to support digestive health. Additionally, Probiotic contains beneficial prebiotics to help foster the growth of good bacteria, setting it apart from other products on the market.

To help maintain a health immune function, it’s always important to exercise regularly, get adequate sleep and visit your healthcare provider, in addition to eating a balanced diet. Follow these guidelines and you’ll be on your way to a lifestyle of Whole Health.

PURE Ask the Expert questions and answers

At PURE: People United Reaching Everyone, we have an expert team that is dedicated to answering your product and nutrition questions.

Here are the most popular questions from the previous week. You might find a topic related to a question you have.

Q: At what age can a young man begin to take Daily Build? What is the recommended dosage ?

A: Use of our dietary supplements, including Daily Build, is recommended for anyone over the age of 18 years. You may note that the nutritional needs of children during growth and maturation are different from those of adults. Please consult your doctor about appropriate supplements for people younger than 18 years of age.

Q: What products help with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

A: The products are intended to supplement a healthy diet. The products are not formulated for the treatment of specific health conditions, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  Before using products we recommend you consult with your healthcare provider to determine whether or not they are okay to be used in your specific situation.  Some research suggests probiotics may help in maintaining healthy gut flora, including in persons with IBS. By introducing healthy bacteria like those found in Probiotic, digestive tract function may be improved. Probiotic provides good bacteria the gut needs to digest foods properly.  Mila is another product, which might be helpful.  Some but not all individuals with IBS need to increase their consumption of dietary fiber. The soluble fiber contained in Mila (chia seeds) may be effective in helping to improve regularity and elimination. In general, fiber helps promote satiety and may offer relief from occasional constipation; however, it is also important to increase intake of fluids at the same time. Drink plenty of water when increasing your intake of fiber. According to the USDA, chia seeds contain a significantly higher percentage of fiber than corn, rice, oats, wheat, or barley. We strongly recommend discussing your choices with your healthcare provider to make sure they are appropriate. If your healthcare provider has asked you to increase your fiber intake, we suggest introducing Mila to your diet slowly. Begin with 1 tablespoon for the first couple of days to see how it works for you. Increase to 2 tablespoons daily if you are able to tolerate the increased amount of fiber in your diet. Please remember, our products do not treat, cure or prevent any disease, including irritable bowel syndrome.

Q: Which product provides the body’s daily requirement of vitamin B12?

A: Daily Build has an excellent blend of B vitamins, including vitamin B12. Daily Build contains 500mcg of vitamin B12.  This is 8333% of the recommended Daily Value (DV). GoYin also contains 11.8mcg vitamin B12 (200% DV). A third option for obtaining the body’s daily requirement of this vitamin is Energy. One serving of this product delivers 34mcg (567% DV) of vitamin B12.

Spice up your cleansing regimen

Spices-blog_0616 Herbs are truly a gift from nature. Not only do they add wonderful flavor to dishes, but they offer many health benefits, including the possibility of cleansing the body of harmful toxins.

Spices like black pepper, cumin, ginger, parsley, oregano, and turmeric may have cleansing properties. And, many of them can be easily grown in a backyard garden. Couple these herbs with your favorite meals to take advantage of their potential cleansing benefits.

  • Black and white pepper are great flavor agents. They are made from the Piper-nigrum Black pepper is ground from dried, whole unripe fruit. White pepper is ground from dried, ripe fruit that has had the outer layer removed. Black pepper may help digestion by increasing hydrochloric acid secretion, necessary for the digestion of proteins and other foods within the stomach.BioPerine, a black pepper extract, is a key ingredient in PURE Café. It enhances the absorption of nutrients.
  • Ginger is considered by many to be one of the best detoxifying herbs. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years for its antioxidant benefits. In fact, it is used in many cleansing programs. The beneficial portion of the plant is referred to as the rhizome, which is the thick underground stem. To benefit from this herb, try infusing finely chopped ginger root in boiling water. Add lemon juice and Stevia sweetener for a refreshing drink, hot or cold.
  • Milk Thistle gets its name from the milky sap that comes out of the leaves when they are broken. The seeds are more commonly used. It is known to have antioxidant properties, and is an ingredient in Capsule Cleanse.
  • Oregano, we know, is widely used in Italian food. A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that oregano, among other dried culinary herbs, contained very high concentrations of antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect healthy cells from damaging free radicals. The authors stated that in a normal diet, the intake of herbs may contribute significantly to the total intake of plant antioxidants, and can be an even better source of dietary antioxidants than many other food groups such as fruits, berries, cereals and vegetables.1 Oregano adds flavor to broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms and potatoes. It tastes great sprinkled on chicken dishes as well.
  • Parsley’s unique taste comes from a phytochemical called polyacetylene. This herb contains vitamin C, chlorophyll, beta-carotene, vitamin K and folate, which may be used by the body for detoxification. Finely chop parsley and add it to a salad or use it in pesto. Parsley can also be added to juices or smoothies.
  • Turmeric is a plant that comes from the ginger family. It contains a phytochemical substance called curcumin, found in Daily Build. It is yellow in color, and is found in a lot of foods from curry to mustard. Studies suggest that curcumin’s antioxidant properties can support overall health by helping your body maintain a healthy inflammatory response to potentially harmful foreign invaders. Add turmeric to soups, rice dishes, vegetable and chicken dishes and more. Another nice treat is to add 2 teaspoons turmeric, 1 teaspoon ground ginger and a few drops of Stevia natural sweetener to warmed almond milk.
