There’s a fungus among us

The lowly mushroom is often misunderstood but did you know it is one of the most nutritious foods in the world? Healthcare providers emphasize eating our vegetables and the more colorful, the better. But the mushroom is neither a vegetable (it’s a fungus), nor is it colorful. So what gives?

Mushrooms are considered adaptogens in that they help the body adapt to and resist physical, chemical, and environmental stress.  They are natural substances that help increase the body’s resistance to stress and fatigue.3

We should be incorporating more in our diet as they are high in antioxidants. They are also high in selenium, a mineral that helps boost immunity and protect the body against oxidative damage. Mushrooms also contain vitamin D, folate, fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and heart healthy beta-glucans1 which are a dietary fiber found in the stem of the mushroom.2

What are some types of mushrooms and their benefits?

The following mushrooms are used in select products by PURE. Many of these have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

  • Moomiyo, also found in GPS Adapt, properties helps the body recover faster from both mental (emotional) and physical stresses and fatigue. It can help increase training and workloads, increasing lean muscle mass. It has natural detox properties to help rid the body of harmful toxins.
  • Codonopsis, found in GPS Adapt, helps stimulate the immune system. It may also help increase endurance as well as promote circulation.
  • Cordyceps, found in GPS Adapt, is a fungus that lives on certain caterpillars in the high mountain regions of China. It is high in polysaccharides and might improve immunity by stimulating cells and specific chemicals in the immune system. It also may help improve energy, appetite, stamina, endurance and sleeping.
  • Reishi, found in Greens and GPS Adapt, contains water-soluble polysaccharides, triterpenoids, proteins and amino acids. Reishi is an important adaptogenic mushroom.
  • Maitake, found in Greens, contains potassium, B vitamins, fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and beta glucans.

Other types of edible mushrooms.

Here are the more common mushrooms, the kind you are likely to add to your salad or stir fry.

White button mushrooms contain nutrients our bodies need to generate energy and repair cells — including digestive enzymes, B vitamins, protein, and vitamin D2.

Cremini mushrooms are high in vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B5. B vitamins are necessary for the proper function of red blood cells. You can find these in the grocery store. They are similar to the white button mushrooms but are higher in nutrients.

Portobello mushrooms contain antioxidants which help slow down the aging process by fighting free radicals. These mushrooms are large and meaty, making them healthy alternatives to the hamburger when grilled and marinated.

Shitake mushrooms also have a meaty cap and are available fresh or dried. They have a slightly smoky flavor are high in B vitamins. They contains the same amount of amino acids as meat. 2 This kind of mushroom is found in Greens.

Oyster mushrooms are more delicate than others and have a slightly peppery flavor.

Make room for more mushrooms in your diet.

Mushrooms are versatile and add unique flavors to your dishes. Add them to a stir fry with other vegetables. They are a great addition to rice dishes. Fill mushroom caps with grated cheese, tomatoes, and spices and bake. You can even add mushrooms to soups.

Mushrooms are also low in sodium, fat, cholesterol and calories. What are you waiting for? How will you incorporate mushrooms into your diet?

Are the change in seasons putting a damper on your immune health?

Sometimes the transition between summer and fall puts added stress on our immune system and bodies. Your body is constantly out of balance, trying to navigate a fine line between internal and external challenges. Walk that line more confidently with the right nutrition. We all know how beneficial vitamins and minerals are for us, but do you know which are the best and most readily available?

We’ve compiled a list of five immune-boosting foods to help keep you happy and healthy during the fall and winter months.

Seeds and Nuts — Zinc is an essential mineral that helps support healthy immune function, but it’s not stored by the body. Consuming nuts and seeds is a great way to boost your intake. A quarter cup of raw pumpkin seeds contains 2.57 mg of zinc. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDAs) for zinc for adults is 8-11mg. Daily Build contains 20mg of zinc per serving, and CalciuMK+ contains 7.5mg zinc per serving.

Mushrooms — Surround yourself with fungus, mushrooms that is. All mushrooms contain beta-glucan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide. Studies suggest that beta-glucan might stimulate the immune system.1 Oyster and portabella mushrooms are good choices. Add mushrooms to stir-fry or pasta dishes. Greens contains an organic mushroom blend of shitake, maitake and reishi varieties — all good sources of beta-glucan. GoYin contains Coriolus versicolor mushroom, another great source of beta-glucans.

Fruits and Vegetables — Vitamins A, C, and E are particularly helpful in supporting immunity. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, dark leafy greens and sweet potatoes. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, and bell peppers. Dark leafy greens, butternut squash and avocado are excellent sources of vitamin E. Pairing these and other fruits and vegetables with adequate protein intake will help supercharge your immunity. Immune6 is an excellent source of vitamin C, as well as vitamin D3. Daily Build contains 446% vitamin E in each serving, as well as over 600% vitamin C. GPS Adapt contains 200% vitamin C. CalciuMK+ is a great source of both vitamin A, D and E.

Garlic — Garlic contains allicin, a component that has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A review published in the February 2009 issue of “Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry” notes that allicin has a variety of antimicrobial properties.2

Probiotics — Probiotics have specific compounds that may help regulate the functions of immune cells and intestinal cells.3 Probiotic is uniquely formulated with seven different types of beneficial bacterial strains of healthy bacteria to support digestive health. Additionally, Probiotic contains beneficial prebiotics to help foster the growth of good bacteria, setting it apart from other products on the market.

To help maintain a health immune function, it’s always important to exercise regularly, get adequate sleep and visit your healthcare provider, in addition to eating a balanced diet. Follow these guidelines and you’ll be on your way to a lifestyle of Whole Health.

Ask the Expert: Frequently Asked Questions

At Genesis PURE, we have an expert team that is dedicated to answering your product and nutrition questions.

Here are the most popular questions from the previous week. You might find a topic related to a question you have.

Q: Is the whey protein in Rebuild whey isolate four-way concentrate? Are the L-leucine valine and L-lysine contributing to the protein count?

A: Yes, the whey protein is a whey isolate. Rebuild has both concentrate and isolate, but mostly concentrate. The ratio is 2:1 concentrate to isolate from whey. It is generally regarded as a high-quality protein due to its amino acid profile and fast absorption rate. Lysine and leucine are two of nine essential amino acids. Both these amino acids play vital roles in protein synthesis and can help promote the recovery and growth of muscle tissue. Rebuild has 20g of protein per serving.

Q: What is the recommended amount of Mila to be taken daily? Is Mila to be taken one or two times per day. If two times, what is the recommended amount?

A: You can take Mila up to three times a day, as it is a food. We recommend adding one scoop of Mila to your favorite beverages, cereal, yogurt, salads, cereals, smoothies, and recipes. Did you know that chia seeds can absorb up to 10 times their weight? This makes them great as thickeners in sauces, puddings, dips, and spreads. You can replace ¼ of the oil or 1 egg in your recipes. Simply add ½ scoop Mila to 3 tablespoons water and allow to sit for 15 minutes before using. As a versatile ingredient with a mild flavor, Mila can be incorporated into your favorite recipes. Mila pairs nicely with most our products; combine Mila with GPS Hydrate and Greens for an afternoon pick-me-up!

Q: My wife began using the Rally 28 products about a week ago.  She desires to have better overall health and help get a jump-start to losing weight.  She has had problems with sleep.  Are there any ingredients that will contribute to her sleep issues?  What would be a length of time that a person should drink a shake prior to wanting to fall asleep?

A: 360 Complete Shake does contain caffeine (about 35mg per serving), so we recommend enjoying it in the morning and/or afternoon. Caffeine affects everyone differently and can interfere with sleep. Metabolic ONE also contains caffeine from natural sources (88mg per 3 capsules). It too should be taken earlier in the day and you may choose to reduce the number of capsules from 3 to 2 capsules each time used.  If sleeplessness persists, you can drop it down to 1 capsule twice daily.  This dose is not ideal, but some is better than none for boosting metabolism and energy.  Our new CalciuMK+ is a liquid, non-dairy formula that offers Rapid Delivery of calcium, magnesium and vitamin K2, PLUS vitamins D, A, C and E and essential trace minerals. The magnesium helps relax muscles for restful sleep. Aromatically, lavender essential oil has been shown to relieve tension and support well-being, especially at night.  Additionally, topical application of Lavender essential oil with a carrier oil may promote relaxation. Our Ease8 essential oil blend contains Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Cypress, Wintergreen, Lavender, Blue tansy, Blue Chamomile and Helichrysum and is a relaxing aroma.

ATEoftheWeek_0216At Genesis PURE, we have an expert team that is dedicated to answering your product and nutrition questions.

Here are the most popular questions from the last week. You might find a topic related to a question you have.

Q: Are  you diluting the effectiveness of Acai when you ultra pasteurize it? Can I say it’s all natural if we are altering it after it’s picked and before it’s bottled? A: Although the levels of certain nutrients in Acai may decrease with pasteurization, the final product retains most of the original nutritional value. After you open pasteurized juice, it may lose nutritional value due to exposure to light and the air. To optimize nutritional value, store pasteurized juice in the container in which it came. Acai is still all natural as we are not altering or adding any ingredients.

Q: The previous Shake formula/ingredients showed a Greens blend, a Superfruit blend, and some others. Were those ingredients taken out of the 360 Complete Shake?   A: We did reformulate our meal replacement shake last year to better align with our HealthTrim line of products. We still have a superfruit blend with a vegetable that is listed with the other ingredients. The 360 Complete Shake contains papaya fruit powder, carrot powder, goji berry extract, noni extract, noni extract, mangosteen extract, acai extract, pomegranate extract, tart cherry powder, and raspberry powder.
As a meal replacement shake, it incorporates whey and pea proteins, as well as a unique potato extract and fiber blend that helps the body control feelings of hunger. 360 Complete Shake offers a combination of vitamins and minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber. Each 160-calorie serving is ideal for those looking to replace a meal or avoid overeating between meals. The secret is in a protein extract and fiber blend. Learn more at

We recommend adding a scoop of Greens to your shake to benefit from those phytonutrients. Or combine it with your favorite fruit juice, smoothie or other Genesis PURE product. Greens is made up of four Proprietary PURE Blends that utilize some of the most beneficial superfoods, botanicals, superfruits, and mushrooms available, giving your life the edge it craves and deserves. In this way, your body is benefiting from the whole fruit and vegetable.

Chew on this, and cut calories at the same time

chew_on_this_0217Wouldn’t it be great if you could lose weight while you ate? We are not talking about eating a granola bar while walking on the treadmill. Certain foods actually have thermogenic properties meaning they raise your core body temperature and thus boost your metabolism.

The following foods have actually been shown to boost your body’s calorie-burning potential, so you can burn calories while you chew and digest.

Fat-burning foods:

Whole Grains: Did you know your body is burning calories when you digest food?  In one study, it was shown that a meal containing whole grains required twice as many calories to digest as a meal containing refined grains (137 vs. 73 calories).1 Whole grains have other health benefits as well, including a higher protein and fiber content than refined grains.

Lean or Plant-Based Protein: Moderately increasing protein intake may modestly increase metabolic rate. A healthy protein intake may provide additional weight management benefits by increasing fullness following a meal and promoting retention of lean muscle mass.2

Hot Peppers (capsicum): Peppers may modestly increase both metabolism and fat burning. The benefits of red peppers have been seen in studies using pills as well as whole foods. Regardless of how you ingest it, capsicum may aid your weight management efforts.3   Genesis PURE products such as Daily Build, Metabolic ONE and HealthTrim® Cleanse contain ingredients from peppers. Greens contains organic cayenne fruit and PURE Café has black pepper extract.

Oolong, Green, or White Tea: Oolong, green, and white teas are rich in polyphenols (plant chemicals) and also contain caffeine. The metabolism- and energy-boosting effects of consuming polyphenols and caffeine have been shown in numerous studies.4

Coconut Oil: While coconut oil has not specifically been found to increase metabolic rate or promote fat burning, it may be a beneficial food to add to your weight management program. In recent studies, individuals consuming coconut oil as part of a weight management program experienced greater reductions in waist circumference than those who did not consume the coconut oil5, 6 in addition to helping support weight management, preliminary evidence suggests that coconut oil may also help promote blood cholesterol profiles at normal levels.7

Genesis PURE HealthTrim® line of products:

In addition to the foods above, Genesis PURE’s HealthTrim® line of products can help you reach your own unique weight-management goals with targeted nutrition. The following products are all part of Rally28, Genesis PURE’s Complete Nutrition Weight Loss System.

  • 360 Complete Shake contains a proprietary Craving-Control technology and fat-burning ingredients. A unique potato extract helps promote healthy weight loss while Protease Inhibitor, derived from potato, helps to reduce appetite.*
  • Green Coffee Bean contains chlorogenic acids which offer beneficial polyphenol antioxidants, an amount comparable to some products used in weight management research. Some studies show that the chlorogenic acid in green coffee beans affects how the body handles blood sugar and metabolism.*
  • PURE Café is a slimming coffee that suppresses appetite so you can limit the amount of calories you are eating throughout the day.*
  • Metabolic ONE contains green tea and cayenne pepper and caffeine, ingredients that help supercharge a sluggish metabolism.*

Devise your fat-burning meal today, and be sure to combine it with plenty of exercise and adequate sleep.
