Curb your cravings

MetOne_blog0816 Your kids are yelling, you’re late for work, and someone put a dent in your new car. Stress…it’s an inevitable part of life, but how we deal with it is important for our well-being. When the pressure is on, do you tend to reach for that cookie or bowl of ice cream? Do you buy that candy bar or can of soda? It’s only natural to gravitate toward food as a coping mechanism, especially food that is high in fat and sugar.

‘Stress eating’ is a big contributor to the obesity epidemic in the U.S. Stress wreaks havoc by triggering a craving for carbohydrates. Sugar releases serotonin in the brain making us feel content, and so the cycle begins. When stress is chronic, our bodies naturally increase cortisol levels, which in turn tricks the body into thinking it’s hungry. Therefore, we eat. What is a stressed body to do?

Genesis PURE™ Metabolic ONE

L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea and an important ingredient in Metabolic ONE. When combined with adaptogen herbs, it can help produce a calming effect, helping to alleviate stress.* This in turn supports the body’s ability to convert food into fuel. It also allows your body to utilize insulin more effectively, helping to curb appetite.*

The Importance of Antioxidants

antioxidants_0816 Since the 1990s, antioxidants have garnered much attention from scientists on their effects on the human body.  Today, they seem to be the nutrition “buzzword;” everywhere we look, antioxidants are gaining attention on the cover of health and fitness magazines, medical television shows, and news articles, all enticing you to get your antioxidant fix.  Blueberries, red and purple grapes, blackberries, and dark-green leafy vegetables are just a few of the foods that are high in antioxidants.

What are antioxidants and why should you consume them?

By definition, an antioxidant is a food or other substance that inhibits oxidation. Oxidation is similar to cutting into an apple and letting it sit on the counter, or not preserving your food in an airtight container. It is the reaction that causes your apple to turn brown or your food to spoil.

The same thing happens in your body.  Free radicals in the body can produce oxidation, causing a chain reaction leading to cell damage.  An overload of free radicals can generate oxidative stress, which has been shown to play a role in aging and chronic and degenerative illness. These free radicals can also be produced from external sources, such as cigarette smoke and pollution. Antioxidants are man-made or natural substances that prevent or delay these dangerous chain reactions. The best way to get more antioxidants in your body is by consuming a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.  Just like adding lemon juice to a sliced apple can prevent or delay the oxidation process, adding fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes high in antioxidants to your diet can prevent or delay the oxidation process in our cells.

How to recognize antioxidants on food labels.

Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene is a fat-soluble vitamin that is important in vision, bone growth, and the immune system.  It is commonly found in liver, whole milk, dark leafy greens, sweet potatoes, carrots, and winter squashes.

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid; it is a water-soluble vitamin that is needed for growth and repair of tissues in the body. It is also useful for healing wounds and forming scar tissue, repairing and maintaining bones, cartilage and teeth and in forming collagen in the skin.  It is commonly found in citrus fruits and juices, green peppers, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, kale, and strawberries.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin important for immunity and metabolic processes. Food sources include nuts, seeds, vegetables, fish oils, whole grains, fortified cereals, apricots, and other foods.

Selenium is an essential trace element and has attracted much interest in recent years because of its role in supporting the body’s own protective antioxidant system.  Foods that are a good source of selenium include seafood, cereals, and meat products.

Many of Genesis PURE’s products contain antioxidants.

Acai is an antioxidant powerhouse. In fact, it’s known as the “Beauty berry,” because antioxidants fight against aging and are commonly used in beauty products. Its deep purple color comes is high in anthocyanins, a powerful class of phytonutrients that function as antioxidants.

360 Complete Shake, Coral Calcium and Daily Build (liquid) are also excellent sources of antioxidants.

It is important to eat your carrots and fill up your plate with leafy greens, squash, berries, and an array of other colorful fruits and vegetables.  A variety of color indicates a healthy variety of antioxidants and other nutrients.   Do what you can now to prevent or delay health conditions in the future.

  8. Find a mentor, whether that’s your sponsor of someone else.
  9. Contact everyone on your list…friends, family, neighbors, EVERYONE.
  10. Have fun!

A runner places his feet just so, and moves his arms in a way that gives him momentum. You too must develop habits that are going to launch you in the right direction. Losing your pace can lead to delays, or even failure. Adhere to the above activities and you’ll excel faster and smoother as the days progress.

Most importantly, take care of yourself. Live what you preach by eating a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep and exercising at least thirty minutes every day. To achieve a lifestyle of Whole Health, it’s important to have a healthy body and a healthy business.

Back to school with Mila

1458310629_1 Although you and your kids may groan (or celebrate) the thought of returning to school, there are many ways to get your kids into a healthy routine before that bus comes around the corner.

In my opinion, there’s one place where you can alleviate the back-to-school blues and that’s in the kitchen. While your kids may balk at the idea of eating something new or different, getting their input on food choices and allowing them to get their hands a bit messy gives them power over their choices. So, get them involved in the meal planning.

Mila plays well with others

As a prized superfood, Genesis PURE™ Mila® can be easily added into some of their favorite foods or recipes.  As a staple in the Mayan and Aztec cultures, this gluten-free, trans-fat free, sugar-free, and plant-based source of protein and fiber can be a staple in your kitchen.

  • What could be more fun and kid friendly than chicken strips? Skip the fried chicken and make chicken tenders with a twist. Have your kids mix about a quarter cup of Mila to the breading mixture and you’ll have a crunchy alternative to the popular fried chicken.
  • Add chia seeds to your whole wheat muffin batter for a quick, last minute breakfast or afternoon snack. Using fresh or frozen berries, you can freeze these muffins and then put them into your kid’s lunch bags to thaw. They are a great alternative to a traditional high-fat muffin.
  • Create a more fiber- and protein-rich breakfast by adding a scoop of Mila to homemade granola. Most pre-made granolas are too high in sugar and calories and low in fiber. Create your own with dried fruit, nuts, oats, a dash of sweetener, like honey, and Mila!
  • Spaghetti and meatballs were a weekly staple in my youth. Mila gels and expands when added to liquid, so it’s a great binder in place of eggs in your homemade meatball recipes.
  • Frozen fruit and spinach are great to have on hand for morning smoothies. Combine your favorite fruits, such as strawberries, bananas, and peaches for a taste of summer! Add in a scoop of Mila to boost the nutrient content.
  • For dessert, make some healthy ice pops with Mila to beat the summer heat! Your child will never know they’re healthy! Try using fresh mango, soaked Mila and coconut milk. Let two Tbsp. of Mila soak in ¼ cup of water overnight so they are ready to go! The next day, blend the mixture with one can of coconut milk and fresh mango (frozen works fine too).  Pour into your ice pop mold or ice cube tray and freeze!
  • Create a healthy, high fiber dessert! Combine five scoops of Mila with two cups almond, soy, or other milk, ½ tsp. vanilla extract in a sealed container and let the Mila go to work! Let it sit in the fridge for at least two hours. Once it gels, top with your favorite nuts and fruit! Again, let your kids create their own, healthy masterpiece!

You can top just about anything with Mila — yogurt, oatmeal, eggs, and cereal — the options are endless! Just remember to start your child with a ½ scoop.  With three grams of protein, five grams of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium, Mila is definitely a super food for super kids!

You asked, we answered

ATEoftheWeek_0216 Q: What products do you recommend to support healthier sinuses?

A: None of the Genesis PURE products were designed to treat any disease states, including sinus or allergy issues. However, keeping your immune system in shape is always important, and that includes exercise, sleep and stress reduction. Our Immune6 product gives your body the vitamins and fortification is needs to sustain health and well–being during the change of seasons.* Immune6 helps build, invigorate, and support the body’s natural immune response.* It is an excellent source of the antioxidants vitamin C and selenium, as well as vitamin D3, all of which have been shown to support immune health.*

Q: Could our pills be broken apart and mixed with water for people that have had lap-band surgery? Or is that even a concern since it is a vegetable capsule?

A:  I would check with your physician to see if there is any reason he/she feels you should not break a capsule supplement apart.  In general, pills can be crushed and mixed with water. Due to the lap-band procedure that was undertaken, there are normally specific dietary guidelines for food and fluid intake that are advised by your practitioner to follow.  We suggest for that reason that your practitioner is aware of the supplements that you are taking, especially as they may have already recommended specific  supplements for you to take.

Q: What products have the highest levels of  Calcium? What about for Vitamin D?

A: Genesis PURE’s Coral Calcium has 150% of Vitamin D (600 IU)s and 53% Calcium (530 mg).  Daily Build has 100% of Vitamin D (400 IU), 360 Complete Shake has 50% of Vitamin D (200 IU) and 45% Calcium (450 mg).

You don’t need a prescription for laughter

laughter3_0816 Today, August 16, is National Tell a Joke Day. It’s time to let it rip, to tell that favorite joke with friends, or to hang out with the comedians in the family. When was the last time you laughed so hard that you snorted, then laughed because you snorted?  It may be just the thing you need to boost your health.

But, let’s get serious. Studies show that laughing can mimic the benefits of meditation, like reducing stress, blood pressure and pain. During laughter, the entire brain is activated, with high gamma wave activity.

Benefits of laughter on the body.

  • Researchers at the University of Maryland studied the effects on blood vessels when people were shown either comedies or dramas. The blood vessels of the group who watched the comedy behaved normally. But the blood vessels in people who watched the drama tended to tense up, restricting blood flow.1
  • Some studies have shown that humor may raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body and boost the levels of immune cells. 1
  • One study of 19 people with diabetes looked at the effects of laughter on blood sugar levels. After eating, the group attended a tedious lecture. On the next day, the group ate the same meal and then watched a comedy. After the comedy, the group had lower blood sugar levels than they did after the lecture. 1
  • A group of Japanese researchers found that laughing in the evening causes the body to produce more melatonin (the hormone released by the brain at sleep onset).2

The benefits of laughter also mimic a mild workout. Laughing boosts heart rate and burns calories. In a small study at Vanderbilt University, it turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories.

So make it a day with lots of laughter. Watch a funny animal video on YouTube or a rerun of Saturday Night Live. Tell some jokes, listen to jokes, or pass along a few humorous emails. The more, the merrier. Whatever makes you laugh, take a break to do it! It’s part of a healthy lifestyle.
